General Santos LGU Declares Pura Luka Vega Persona Non-Grata
The local government unit of General Santos City declared Drag artist Pura Luka Vega Pura Luka Persona Non-Grata following “Ama Namin Remix” performance.
General Santos City’s local government issued a resolution proclaiming drag diva Pura Luka Vega “persona non grata,” or forbidden from entering the city. According to a GMA Regional TV report, the local authorities harshly chastised the drag queen for her viral drag act.
The GenSan Council stated in its resolution that they will not accept such behavior. According to Councilor Vandyke Congson, his film plainly offended the Christian community’s sensibilities while also degrading a fundamental aspect of the Catholic Church.
“This video clearly offended the sensibilities of the Christian community. Demeaning the faith of millions of Filipinos and disrespecting the sacred element of the Catholic Church,” said Congson.
“May this be a reminder or warning to all [in] generals that your government will not tolerate such activity in our beloved city of GenSan,” he continued, based on the report.
Netizens chastised the drag queen for performing a brief remixed version of “Ama Namin” while dressed as Jesus Christ. The public, including senators, condemned the performance as vulgar, insulting, and blasphemous.
The drag queen has justified her actions, claiming that everyone has the right to free thinking, conscience, and religion. Despite the criticism, Vega stated her intention to continue mimicking Jesus Christ in order to pay honor to the Catholic Church from a unique gay perspective.
Senators including Senator JV Ejercito also condemned Pura Luka Vega and his actions were deemed “blasphemous” by others. Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri even suggested filing criminal proceedings under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code.
