Police Couple Firing Shots Against Reporters in Leyte Relieved from Post
A couple police officials were relieved from their posts for allegedly harassing and firing shots against reporters in Leyte.
The Philippine National Police ordered the release of two officers in Leyte after they harassed local media covering a land dispute in which the officers were involved. Police Staff Sergeant Rhea May Baleos and her husband, Police Staff Sergeant Ver Baleos.
The two police officials were posted to the Pastrana Municipal Police Station and the Sta Fe Municipal Police Station, respectively. The officer-in-charge of the Leyte police, Lieutenant Colonel Ricky Reli, removed the pair from their duty.
According to the Philstar report, they were also asked to surrender their issued firearms. The two cops allegedly harassed San Juanico TV reporters Lito Bagunas, Noel Sianos, and Ted Tomas as they were interviewing farmers in Barangay Jones.
According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, PSSg Rhea Baleos snatched Sianosa’s smartphone and pulled him aside while he was filming. The three journalists heard gunfire a few minutes later. Officers in uniform, according to Tomas, fired the rounds.
The PNP is investigating the incident, according to the Leyte police chief. You can be confident that their investigation will be unbiased. If it is proven that our employees committed all of the allegations, our office will not accept such behavior,” Reli stated.
