CBCP will File Case vs Drag Queen Pura Luka After Video of “Ama Namin” Dance Goes Viral
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) to file charges against Drag Queen Pura Luka Vega over viral “Ama Namin” dance.
According to the CBCP, the drag artist who went viral on social media after wearing a Jesus Christ costume while partying in a remixed version of the song ‘Ama Namin’ may face charges. In an interview, CBCP’s spokesperson Fr. Jerome Secilliano, called the performance of Vega ‘disrespectful’.
“It is very clear there that some elements of our faith, sacred elements at that, were used for secular purposes, especially for entertainment. When I first saw it, I felt really disgusted” the priest said during his interview with CNN Ph.
He also rejected Vega’s explanation that his performance was also an act of worship. Secillano likewise admonished Catholics to avoid using Church aspects for amusement, as Vega had.
In the meantime, he stated that the CBCP would allow other priests to submit charges against Vega. They are allowed to do whatever they choose, such as file a lawsuit, he said. Secillano also mentioned future legal proceedings against Vega in his Facebook post.
Secillano believes that Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code may apply. “Immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions, and indecent shows,” according to Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code.
