Senators Urged MTRCB to Ban “Barbie” Film in the Philippines

Senators Appealed to MTRCB to Ban “Barbie” Film from Showing in the Philippines

Senators urged the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to ban the “Barbie” film from showing in the Philippines cinemas.

The release of the Hollywood picture Barbie, released by Warner Bros Pictures, is being asked to be banned. This comes after Senator Francis Tolentino stated that if it is presented in a commercial screening, it will only have ‘injurious’ effects for the Republic of the Philippines’ prestige.

Philippines Ban Barbie

The senator added, “This will not just be injurious to the Republic of the Philippines but would be contrary to what our country fought for and achieved under that Arbitral Ruling in 2016.”

There is a scene in the film when the ‘nine-dash line’ is referenced, which is the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) justification for their alleged militaristic expansion throughout the whole South China Sea (SCS) region, including the zone along the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Remember that the Hague Tribunal ruled in 2016 that Beijing’s ‘nine-dash line doctrine’ over the whole SCS region was unlawful.

Based on the report, Senator Tolentino is requesting that the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) prohibit the commercial exhibition of the Barbie film in the Philippines. The Vietnamese government has already prohibited the screening of Barbie.

Meanwhile, the MTRCB released a statement, which is available here. According to their statement, the appointed Committee on First Review is considering on Warner Brothers’ request for a Permit to Exhibit, and the result will be released as soon as it is available.

“We confirm that the Board has reviewed the film “Barbie”, 04 July 2023. At this time, the assigned Committee on First Review is deliberating on the request of Warner Brothers F.E. Inc. for a Permit to Exhibit. Once available, a copy of the Permit to Exhibit or the Committee’s decision will be uploaded to the Agency’s official website: mtrcb.gov.ph,” the statement said.
