President Marcos Warns Smugglers: “Your days are numbered”

President Marcos Issues Warning Against Smugglers in the Philippines

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr issued a warning against the smugglers operating in the Philippines.

Recognizing the negative impact of onion smuggling on the country’s agricultural business, Marcos committed to investigating smugglers and hoarders and declared he will not tolerate their illicit operations. Their days are numbered, he claims.

He claims that as a result of these, Filipinos’ lives are getting miserable. The President stated that he has directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct an investigation into the country’s onion smuggling problem.

“’Yun ang aming…direksyon dito sa pag-imbestiga na ito. Kaya’t hindi natin basta’t pababayaan ito dahil may ginugutom na Pilipino. May namamatay from starvation and poverty (na) Pilipino dahil sa kanilang ginagawa,” Marcos emphasized when interviewed at the Livestock Philippines Expo 2023 in Pasay City this Wednesday.

“Hindi maaari nilang ituloy ‘yung kanilang ginagawa. Tama na ‘yan at titigilin na natin ‘yung kanilang masasayang ginagawa dati,” Marcos added.

Based on the article of PNA, he described the illegal operation as economic sabotage. Marcos stated that he did not place a timeline on the DOJ and NBI’s inquiry, but that they must produce a well-established finding.

To resolve the issue, the DOJ stated that it would work with other government agencies such as the Bureau of Customs (BOC), the Department of Agriculture (DA), and others. The inquiry by the department includes violations of Republic Act 10845, often known as the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016, which explicitly targets the unlawful importation of agricultural products such as onions.
