Summa Cum Laude Graduate Flexes “Lola” Who Became His Mama & Papa

Summa Cum Laude Graduate Flaunts “Lola” Who Stands as His Mama & Papa

A summa cum laude graduate who grow up without parents pays tribute and flexes his “lola” who became his “mama and papa”.

His outstanding achievements as a graduate of the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics at West Visayas State University, Iloilo City, astounded the online community. Yancy Aubrey Panugon received his summa cum laude diploma with a 1.1 general weighted average (GWA).

People were astounded not just by his academic achievement, but also by his gratitude to his grandmother, who served as “mama” and “papa” to him. Yancy discusses his experiences during his education in the speech he discussed.

He also paid gratitude to his grandmother, “Mamang Norma,” who, despite her condition (blind in one eye), was able to guide and provide for his needs while he was still in school. He recalled how his lola patiently held a flashlight so he could write and read because they didn’t have power at home.

“I can still remember the nights when grandma had to hold the flashlight over my shoulder so I can see what I am writing and reading,” said Yancy.

Candles and flashlights were their sole sources of light. It is stated that after the electricity in the flashlight battery runs out, he continues to do his schoolwork by candlelight. That’s why his professors are perplexed as to why he passes them with candle drips.

“My 73-year-old grandmother had to walk kilometers to see me during card days or PTA meetings. As a child, I was confronted with these harsh conditions head-on, but fortunately, the ending to that chapter was not a letdown as I graduated as the top student, the class valedictorian, from A. Montes I Elementary School,” he said.

“I remember participating in quiz bees not for the love of competition but to win cash prizes, hoping to have some pocket money to survive high school and hang out with my friends at nearby fishball stands. But even then, money from those quiz bees wasn’t enough.”

“There were times when I had less than ten pesos to sustain an entire school day. It was a silent battle, fought hard with the undying determination of my uncle and grandma through a mix of literal and figurative blood, sweat, and tears,” he added.

“Growing up without parents is hard. Thanks to my Lola, who became my Mama and Papa. Salute to all who did their best to be the parental figure of children looking for love and appreciation,” Yancy said in his post.
