Habal-Habal Driver from Cebu Shows Off Singing Skills in AGT That Wows Judges and Audience
A habal-habal driver from Cebu wows the judges of America’s Got Talent (AGT) with his singing skills and gets standing ovations from the audience.
Roland Abante, a fisherman and habal-habal driver from Cebu, demonstrates yet again the incredible talent of Filipinos living overseas. Roland received a standing ovation and four ‘yes’ votes during his audition for America’s Got Talent.
When Heidi Klum, the show’s judge, asked Abante why he decided to compete in the 18th season, he turned around, gathering his emotions. He stated that being on the show was his greatest dream, and Klum rushed up to the platform to embrace Roland.
Speaking through an interpreter, he informed the judges that he caught fish in the morning and drove passengers and goods on his motorcycle throughout the day. Roland described his interest as singing at karaoke in his area.
“In the Philippines, [I] work [as a fisherman] in the morning and in the afternoon, I drive a motorbike and deliver passengers and goods,” he spoke in Bisaya, which was translated to English by his interpreter.
“This is my big dream, to be here,” he added while tears were falling from his eyes.
The singer impressed the audience with his rendition of “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Roland’s full-throated delivery of the song at Tuesday’s audition won a standing ovation from the audience and four thunderous ‘yes’ votes from the judges. As he concluded the song, tears streamed down his cheeks.
Roland was informed by Judge Sofia Vergara that he will eventually quit fishing in the Philippines. Judge Simon Cowell commended Roland’s performance, saying he really enjoyed the singer.
Before Howie Mandel could congratulate the singer, Roland, overcome with emotion, declared that Cowell is his favorite judge of all time. In the show, Cowell pulled him down to the platform for a hug and told him, “You’re amazing.”
