Street Kids in Manila Goes Viral Over “Cashless Begging” Using QR Code

Street kids elicited comments online after they were spotted going “cashless begging” using a QR code to receive money.

Street children in Sampaloc, Manila, went viral when they were seen begging for money with a QR code. Angelo Gabriel Fuentebella, a netizen, posted a photo of the youngsters exhibiting cards with QR codes if the person they are begging for does not have cash or coins.

“Nagsabi kami na wala kaming barya tapos biglang naglabas ng ganun ng QR code kaya natawa muna kami, chineck namin kung totoo yung QR. Nakalagay ‘Beverly,’” netizen Angelo Gabriel Fuentebella said, based on the report of GMA News.

“Laging akong naaawa kaya nagbibigay. Hindi ko na naiisip na hindi pala sa kanila mapupunta ganun. Minsan naman pagkain binibigay ko kung meron ako,” he added.

Meanwhile, authorities cautioned the public that there could be a syndicate behind the street beggars. According to the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), charity should not be given since the beggars may be members of a gang.

“Merong mga sindikato na nasa likod ng mga ganito merong mga instances noon na hinahatid ito ng van sa umaga pinipick up sa gabi,” according to NAPC vice chairperson Reynaldo Tamayo Jr.

According to the Anti-Mendicancy Law of 1978, persons who donate alms face a P500 fine. While the parent of a youngster begging might face up to two years in prison.
