2 Individuals Arrested for Posing as Eye Doctors to Extort Money
Police authorities arrested two (2) individuals for allegedly posing as eye doctors and extorting money from their alleged patients.
2 fake eye doctors were arrested after conducting a medical mission for the eye check-up of students at a school in Barangay Macate, in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya. The two suspects were identified as Marilyn de la Torre, 43 years old, and John Santiago, 57 years old, both residents of the said province, based on the report.
Dela Torre serves as the Provincial Coordinator of the Saint Gabriel Eye and Medical Clinic. Police said the suspects go around the barangays and schools for their eye check-up mission and charge P500 to their client who allegedly has an eye defect.
Santiago, on the other hand, introduces himself as an optometrist and the license is questionable, based on the report. A concerned netizen reported their fraudulent activity to the authorities. As a result, police conducted an entrapment operation against the two.
When the police responded, the other four companions of the two suspects immediately escaped with the van loaded with equipment for an eye examination. The two who were caught in the case of evading Republic Act 8050 or Optometry Law are scheduled to be charged while the authority conducts a follow-up operation.
