Social Media Influencers to Face Charges for Endorsing Online Gambling

Social media influencers and personalities who are endorsing online gambling will face corresponding charges.

The government intends to pursue social media influencers who promote online gambling. This follows the discovery by a cybersecurity expert that some of the people who lost money in the e-wallet software were gambling online.

Influencers Endorsing Online Gambling

“Ang common na app na nandito sa mga taong na-scam ‘to, iyong gambling apps. ‘Yung ine-endorse ng mga sikat na influencer,” technology expert Art Samaniego, based on tehr report of TV Patrol.

“Kapag ito, kapag nag-log in ka sa kanya (gambling app) ang hihingin niya sa’yo MPIN mo… Kapag ikaw nagdagdag ka o nag-recharge ka ng pera dun sa game mo, diretso na ‘yun sa GCash. Hindi ka na hihingan ng OTP kasi MPIN na ‘yung nakalagay sa’yo,” he explained.

As a result, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center will target influencers who promote online gambling. Their gambling advertising should be removed because they have a large number of followers who will be enticed.

“Ang next natin na titirahin dito will be the influencers eh because apparently, alam mo mga milyon, daang libo ‘yung kanilang mga followers, dapat i-take down din ‘yung kanilang mga promotion on gambling eh,”said Usec. Alex Ramos.

On May 9, the e-wallet company GCash was inundated with complaints when account owners’ money was lowered or vanished like a bubble. GCash apologized for the event and stated that it was being investigated.

Jinky Cubillan-Anderson, popularly known as Madam Kilay, recently took to Facebook to express her unhappiness with other content creators that promote gambling on their social media platforms.

She feels that vloggers should not encourage vices in their audiences. She insisted that if they continue to promote gambling, they should stop calling themselves “vloggers.”
