Ed Sheeran Faces “Plagiarism” Complaint in His ‘Thinking Out Loud’ Song

Ed Sheeran Accused of “Plagiarism” with His Hit Song ‘Thinking Out Loud’

International Pop singer Ed Sheeran was accused of “plagiarism” with his hit song ‘Thinking Out Loud’ allegedly copied from another song.

Sheeran has been accused of ripping off Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” in his ballad “Thinking Out Loud.” Singer Ed Sheeran testified as a witness Tuesday in a copyright trial in which he is accused of stealing Gaye’s song “Thinking Out Loud” for his ballad “Thinking Out Loud.”

The lawsuit was originally launched in 2017 by the heirs of Gaye’s co-writer on Let’s Get It On, Ed Townsend. It claims that Sheeran and co-writer Amy Wadge plagiarized a rising four-chord sequence as well as its rhythm.

Sheeran said that he and his co-writer wrote “Thinking Out Loud” after believing for a time that the love inspired by his grandparents’ love story was still alive. Sheeran and co-writer Amy Wadge disputed plagiarism, arguing that the “melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions” of Sheeran’s song are startlingly similar to Gaye’s song’s drum structure.

Sheeran’s response is that many of today’s hit songs sound similar to one another. Based on the report, he also draws comparisons between the Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ and Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry’.

“Most pop songs can fit over most pop songs … You could go from Let it Be to No Woman, No Cry and switch back,” referring to songs by the Beatles and Bob Marley,” he said.

Sheeran bristled at times at the questioning, saying: “If I had done what you’re accusing me of doing, I’d be a quite an idiot to stand on a stage in front of 20,000 people and do that.” When cut off by lawyer Keisha Rice, he said: “I feel like you don’t want me to answer because you know that what I’m going to say is actually going to make quite a lot of sense.”

This isn’t Sheeran’s first time being accused of plagiarism.  He won a UK court battle in April 2022 over his biggest hit, Shape of You, after being accused of plagiarizing a song by little-known artists Sami Chokri and Ross O’Donoghue. He reached a “out-of-court settlement” in 2017 when his song “Photograph” was accused of ripping off Matt Cardle’s song “Amazing.”
