Grace Poe Reacts on LTO Priority Lane Including LGBTQ Members

Senator Grace Poe questioned the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for including LGBTQ members in their priority lane.

Despite his good intentions, Poe blasted an LTO regional office for including a member of the LGTBQ+ community in the priority lane in a statement. Poe, head of the Senate Public Services Committee, stated that every step of the LTO offices should be closely monitored in order to avoid implementing the wrong decision.

“Maaaring tingnan na maganda ang intensiyon, pero tila matindi ang pagkakamali ng isang regional office ng LTO na isama ang LGBTQ+ community sa priority lane,” according to Poe.

According to her, the priority lane was developed for people who have disabilities that limit their physical ability to conduct typical government activities like queuing. Poe emphasized that this should serve as a wake-up call for a deeper understanding of diversity and equity in government service.  This is a significant setback for the LTO leadership’s efforts to improve cooperation and supervision in its offices.

Poe emphasized that if this is an isolated event, it is an administrative error, based on the report. According to Poe, this never happened since, according to the report, the previous Valentine’s Day, a District Office in the same location designated a separate lane for LGBTQ persons, including older residents, people with impairments, and pregnant women.

Poe emphasized that all rules on gender sensitivity, inclusivity, and equality in accessing government services be thoroughly researched before being introduced to the public. The senator went on to say that all government organizations, particularly front-line services like the LTO, must follow the anti-discrimination policy.

Poe was the primary author of legislation that outlawed all types of discrimination. The Senate Committee on Social Justice, Welfare, and Rural Development is considering the proposal.
