4 Police Officers Involved in a Hit-and-Run Against Tricycle Driver Dismissed
Four (4) police officers were dismissed from service after being found guilty in the hit-and-run case against a tricycle driver.
The People’s Law Enforcement Board of Quezon City fired a high-ranking officer and three other cops in the August 2022 hit-and-run that killed a tricycle driver. According to the police report, the victim’s name is Joel Laroa.
The PLEB convicted former Quezon City Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) chief Police Lieutenant Colonel Mark Julio Abong in connection with the victim’s death, according to the article of Philstar. Abong was found guilty of grave misconduct, grave dereliction of duty, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer.
“Overwhelming circumstantial evidence…Wala na kaming iba pang konklusyon kung hindi si Mark Julio Abong ang siyang nakasagasa,” said PLEB chairperson Rafael Calinisan.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Laroa’s brother alleging that Abong hit the victim in a black Ford Ranger. Despite helping the victim, it was stated that the cop left with the support of fellow police officers, based on the report.
Alexander Barredo, a police colonel, and Joan Vicente, a police corporal. According to the certificate signed by PNP Chief Rodolfo Azurin, Abong was brought to the PNP Health Service on the night of the incident to be treated for his injuries.
Abong was also discovered to be inebriated and was transported to the hospital by the city’s police mobile. As a result, even Barredo and Vicente were convicted of dereliction of duty for assisting the suspect rather than arresting him.
Jose Soriano, a police senior master sergeant, was also found guilty of grave misconduct after attempting to halt the investigation into the hit-and-run event. All of the claims leveled against them, according to the accused, are “malicious” and “baseless,” and Barredo and Vicente both stated that they are only rumors, while Soriano stated that he was unaware of the occurrence.
