BI Created TikTok Account to Counter Human Trafficking Schemes
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) launches an account on the video-streaming platform TikTok against human trafficking schemes.
To combat trafficking syndicates that utilize the social media network to attract victims, the BI has developed its own Tiktok account. According to the source, the BI TikTok account is migrating.
According to BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco, the aforementioned account was established after they confirmed reports that numerous young urban professionals had been recruited via Tiktok and Facebook. Tansingco revealed that they were recruited to work at call centers around Asia.
The victims were promised a $1,000 monthly income but ended up working as bitcoin scammers. Based one the report, the repatriated victims told BI about their traumatic experiences with their employers as a result of unsuccessful fraudulent investments.
“Kailangang nating humabol (We need to be at par with them). These syndicates are using these new platforms in recruiting, hence we believe that we need to use the same channels to reach out to the younger audiences to remind them not to fall victim to these scams,” he said in a statement Tuesday.
Tansingco encouraged aspiring OFWs to seek jobs exclusively through reputable avenues such as the Department of Migrant Workers. He went on to say that human trafficking is a huge and serious problem that requires coordinated efforts from all relevant government agencies to solve.
“Trafficking is a multi-faceted issue and must be addressed from its roots. Government agencies must intensify their campaign against trafficking, starting with a massive information campaign to warn victims,” said the BI chief.
