I LOVE YOU – Here are over two hundred (200) ways of saying ‘I love you’ or ‘iniibig kita’ in Philippine languages and dialects.
Valentine’s Day is a special day for many individuals, and it is typically observed by lovers. Many people associate the day with roses, chocolates, and heart-shaped cards.
Many people’s Facebook and Instagram feeds are certainly now loaded and flooded with nice photos of roses, lovely hand-dipped chocolates, and funny anecdotes of two individuals about how they met. There were also posts on social media expressing gratitude, love, and thankfulness for discovering their particular someone.

The booklet included a collection of expressions for “iniibig kita,” or “I love you,” in over 200 Philippine languages and dialects. In 1967, linguist Ernesto Constantino and other members of the language department compiled this.

According to Ethnologue Languages of the World, the Philippines has 186 established languages, four of which are now extinct. There are 41 institutional languages, 72 developing languages, 46 vigorous languages, 13 endangered languages, and 10 dying languages.
On February 6, the House of Representatives approved a bill to suspend the use of the mother language as the principal medium of instruction in early-grade education on final reading. This bill was created in response to a lack of learning materials in the mother tongue.
In October of last year, there was also a push to eliminate Mother Tongue as a subject in Grades 1 through 3. “There is no need to teach it (mother tongue) to the children because this is already their everyday language in the school and community and family.” Education Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III stated.
While some have welcomed this notion, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) has voiced worry that the “step will make learning recovery more difficult and shows how the agency lacks real appreciation of the Mother Tongue’s role in learning.”
