Andoy Ranay defended his series
Director Andoy Ranay has this reaction to remarks that the Kapamilya series Dirty Linen is the Kapuso series Widows’ Web‘s “copycat.”
Direk Andoy has done a lot of movies and TV series under ABS-CBN. His current project is the primetime murder mystery series Dirty Linen. He is co-directing the said series with Direk Onat Diaz. This series featuring a star-studded cast like Janine Gutierrez, Jennica Garcia, Christian Bables, Francine Diaz, Seth Fedelin, Zanjoe Marudo, and many more, premiered on January 23, 2023.
Based on the article in Balita, there were people who commented that the Kapamilya series was copied from the Kapuso murder-mystery drama series Widows’ Web which was aired from February 2022 to April 2022.
The defunct Kapuso series featured Carmina Villaroel, Pauline Mendoza, Ashley Ortega, and Vaness Del Moral.
From the time Dirty Linen premiered, it has become a trending topic on social media. Viewers are loving the “mata-mata acting” that the characters are doing as actors deliver their emotions through their eyes.
On the other hand, there were those who does not like the Kapamilya series as there were those who said that it is just Widows’ Web copycat. When asked to react, Direk Andoy Ranay said, “Oh, there’s such a show? Sorry di ko alam,” referring to the Kapuso series.
Then, the director said that technically speaking ABS-CBN did murder-mystery drama series even before 2022. He cited The Good Son which was released in 2017-2018 and The Killer Bride which aired from 2019 to 2020.
Prior to Dirty Linen, Direk Andoy Ranay also directed the award-winning series The Broken Marriage Vow which featured Jodi Sta Maria, Zanjoe Marudo, and Sue Ramirez and this was adapted from the British series Doctor Foster.
