Onion Prices Will Drop To P50/kilo “Soon” – Salceda

Onion Prices May Soon Drop To P50 Per Kilo Says Salceda

ONION PRICES – Albay Representative Joey Salceda said the prices of onions will soon drop to P50 per kilo.

Many Filipinos are posting jokes about how expensive onions are as the country is going through an onion crisis caused by the crops’ soaring costs due to high demand. Since the holidays, social media has been flooded with posts about onion packages, onions in money envelopes, and onion food prizes.

In a previous article, Kapamilya journalist Doris Bigornia shared a photo of her Bistek Tagalog that has plenty of sliced onions. She made fun of the quantity of onions in her Tweet. She wrote, “Kasusweldo lang kaya konting luxury.”

Based on a report from GMA News, Albay Representative Joey Salceda said the prices of onions in the Philippines will go down as low as 50 pesos per kilo “soon.” The price of the crop now ranges from 300 pesos to 700 pesos per kilo.

“I think everything will normalize, we will have a reversion, it will go back to P50 per kilo,” said Salceda.

“You can cut all my five fingers if it does not…”

“It will go back to P50 soon,” he added.

Without mentioning any names, Joey Salceda, who chairs the House Committee on Ways and Means, claimed that a “mafia” is hoarding onions, which is why the product is so expensive.

“Pagpasok dito, the mafia controls the ports. Punta ka diyan sa Subic, 50 containers diyan filled with onion deliveries…so these came in, they deliver little by little,” he said.

“They initially brought prices down, killed local Filipino farmers and now they control the supply.”
