Palawan Councilor Remembers Gina Lopez Over Severe Flooding

Councilor in Palawan Remembers Former DENR Sec Gina Lopez Warning About Nature

A councilor in Palawan remembered the lectures of late and former Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary Gina Lopez.

After their town experienced flooding following the recent downpour, Puerto Princesa Councilor Elgin Robert L. Damasco recalled Lopez’s point about caring for Mother Nature. Damasco believes Lopez was not wrong in her environmental efforts.

Palawan Councilor Gina Lopez

Netizens, particularly those from Puerto Princesa, appear to agree with this. According to them, the cause of the sudden floods is a combination of local activities such as mining and illegal logging.

Lopez was a philanthropist and environmentalist from the Philippines. During Lopez’s term, she shut down many mining businesses that she said were seriously harming the environment.

Lopez was selected by former President Rodrigo Duterte because of her advocacy and legacy in nature and environmental protection. Lopez did not complete her tenure after being “dismissed” from the Commission of Appointments (CA) hearing purportedly owing to “controversial policies” and “alleged incompetence”.
