Manny Pacquiao Speaks Out to Ex-Referee Carlos Padilla Cheating Revelation
Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao speaks out about the revelation of ex-referee Carlos Padilla cheating to help him win.
The eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao recently insisted that he did not use unfair means to gain an advantage over Nedal Hussein in 2000. The clarification was demanded in response to Filipino referee Carlos Padilla’s admission of dishonesty.
In an interview, Padilla said that he had reportedly been instructed to help Pacquiao to win to advance to the world championship. Padilla said that he increased the count from 10 seconds to 18 seconds when Pacquiao was knocked down in the fourth round.
Hussein was KO’d by Pacquiao in the tenth round thanks to Padilla’s dishonesty. Padilla thinks that the aforementioned bout gave Pacquiao the opportunity to face a world champion.
“That fight, I’m about to go and leave the following day, and they told me, ‘Carlos, please this is an important fight for Pacquiao because the winner will have the chance to fight for the world championship,” said the retired boxing referee.
In spite of this, “Pambansang Kamao” claimed he was fair. There is only a “home court” advantage. Additionally, he argued that what Padilla did was not his concern and that he was only acting in the capacity of a fighter.
“Hindi man daya. Pinaburan lang tayo, pabor lang siguro syempre home court. As a boxer ginawa ko lang naman yung tama. Ako naman boxer lang ako. Ginagawa ko lang yung trabaho ko sa taas ng ring. That’s his [Carlos Padilla] problem, not mine,” said Pacquiao in ABS-CBN’s report.
He claimed that since he is only a boxer, what the referee did is not his concern. Hussein said, “I hope Padilla will be made to pay for his dishonesty.” The retired Australian fighter made it clear that all he wants from Pacquiao is fair bouts in the ring, not money.
