NCAA Chairman to Give John Amores a Second Chance to Play

John Amores will be Given a Second Chance to Play Again After Assault

The chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) decided to give Jose Rizal University (JRU) player John Amores a second chance to play again.

The NCAA’s head, Father Vic Calvo, gave an explanation of why they only chose to suspend Amores for an extended period of time. According to Calvo, they didn’t want to give Amores a lifelong ban since they still wanted to give the basketball player an opportunity to prove himself.

John Amores Second Chance

This was in spite of what Amores did to a basketball player for the University of the Philippines (UP) as well as to members of the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) basketball team in July. The priest claims that they are merely giving Amores a small window of opportunity to preserve his career.

“Depende po sa interventions na gagawin ng JRU sa bata. Pero kaya indefinite ban, closest in a nice way of saying para kahit papaano we are just open. We are just giving him a little opening for him to maybe save his career,” Calvo said.

Based on the report, they claim that Amores still has an opportunity to file an appeal. The chairman stated that Amores has more that he can do in the future and that we may extend our assistance to the child.

“We’re not saying na this is it, but we still open the door for a new process, na he has the right to appeal. He has all the right and the privileges because he is in a democratic association – we respect that right,”  the chairman stated.

“Justice but merciful, so, pwede namin isulat na lifetime ban. But we [are] just opening up a small window for the child to return, possibly. Because he has more in the future that he can do and also we can extend our help para matulungan ‘yung bata.” he added.

They also attempted to get in touch with JRU, asking if they required assistance in reforming Amores. Calvo noted that the institution will consider interventions for the child’s benefit, such as those for anger control, mental and psychological support, spiritual guidance, and so forth. So, the individual – or, rather, the player – can be assisted.
