Ateneo Shooting Gunman Chao Tiao Yumol Pleads Not Guilty

Gunman Chao Tiao Yumol Pleads Not Guilty to Multiple Cases Against Him

Dr Chao Tiao Yumol pleads not guilty to killing three people during a shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University.

The shooter who targeted the Ateneo de Manila law school graduation ceremonies in July was named Yumol. He once again filed a not guilty plea in the case of murder, frustrated murder, and carjacking charges filed against him.

Yumol Not Guilty

According to the report, Atty Quirino Esguerra, the Furigay family’s attorney presented his plea during an interview via phone. Rose Furigay, a former mayor of Lamitan, Basilan, who was there for her son’s graduation, appeared to be the assailant’s intended victim.

Despite being transferred to the hospital, Furigay passed dead. After various delays brought on by Yumol’s attorney’s request for a mental health evaluation to establish whether or not he can attend the trial, the arraignment for his charges finally took place.

Esguerra claims that because Yumol is still in detention, the arraignment was conducted through video conference. The defense attorney for the suspect was physically present in Branch 98 of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

Esguerra disclosed that Yumol had been found competent to stand trial by the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH). Additionally, he stated that the defense panel attempted to have the arraignment delayed once more, but the court refused because the results of the mental health evaluation had already been released.

Due to his apparent animosity toward the Furigay family, the detectives think Yumol had a reason for killing the family. The suspect, a 38-year-old doctor from Lamitan City, is enraged with Furigay for making complaints about him on the internet.
