Comelec Warns ‘Overage’ Candidates Running for SK Elections

Comelec Warned Overage Candidates Seeking SK Official Seat

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has warned the ‘overage’ aspiring candidates running for Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Candidates who are “overage” and plan to submit a certificate of candidacy (COC) for the 2018 SK elections will be closely scrutinized by Comelec. According to the article, the Comelec will disqualify candidates who violate the age restriction.

SK Elections Overage

According to Comelec Chairman George Garcia, a lot of people get by and commit these crimes because they are aware that Comelec handles a lot of cases that are not promptly addressed. Garcia gave a warning to anybody planning to enter illegally so as to avoid this since they would be thoroughly vetted when the COC was approved.

“We can now refuse to accept the certificates of candidacies… that is to prevent our electoral process from being prostituted,” said Garcia.

According to Section 10 of Republic Act No. 10742, SK officials, whether elected or appointed, must be Filipino citizens, be registered to vote, have lived in their barangay for at least a year, and be between the ages of 18 and 24 on election day.

The Senate and Congress ratified the bicameral conference committee report on delaying the Barangay and SK elections and conducting them in October 2023, but the Comelec will still proceed with this. The only thing needed in this situation is President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s signature.

The Comelec and the National Producing Office (NPO) have started printing the 91 million ballots needed for the BSKE, however they have not yet been fully implemented. The Comelec claims that this is being done to guarantee that there will be ballots accessible on December 5 and that they won’t be squandered if the election is postponed.
