“The Son” Movie About a Father of Depressed Teenager Change the Parenting Style of Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman claims that taking on the role of a father to a depressed teenager in “The Son”, which had its Venice premiere on Wednesday, caused him to reevaluate his entire parenting perspective.
After reading Florian Zeller’s stage adaptation, the Australian actor says he felt “like a fire in my gut,” to take on the role. Jackman and Laura Dern play separated parents attempting to deal with their son’s worsening depression.
“It was a compulsion…it’s a scary, beautiful feeling to have, that you rarely get as an actor, that you feel the part is right for you at this point in your life and you just must play it,” Hugh said to the reporters in Venice.
Based ion the report of GMA News, what he didn’t anticipate was how the film’s horrifying portrayal of mental illness would alter his own connection with his kids.
“For many years as a parent, the job was to appear strong and dependable, But…since this movie, I’ve changed my approach. I share my vulnerabilities more with my 17- and 22-year-old kids, and I see the relief when I do,” Hugh said.
After having a successful theater career, Anthony Hopkins, who also makes a brief but significant appearance in “The Son,” was the star of Zeller’s debut film, “The Father,” which earned Oscars for him and Hopkins.
The report mentioned that, Jackman claimed to have taken the unusual step of directly emailing Zeller to request the part, and the director claimed to have consented after just eight minutes of speaking with him on a Zoom call.
“I felt something very strong about the reason he was connected to that story,” said.
“It was the best decision ever because from that moment it was such a joyful, truthful and intense journey that we have shared.” he added.
