SENTENCE OUTLINE – These are the several aspects to be considered in writing a sentence outline and here’s an example.

Outlining holds great importance and value for organizing your topics and ideas before writing a speech, a research paper, or an essay. The manner of outlining will help you construct your ideas in a sequential and thoughtful flow.

Sentence Outline

This way, you are also given the chance to choose relevant and significant thoughts and supporting ideas to include to steady the foundation of your stand. There are two ways in doing so – topic outlining and sentence outlining.

Topic outlining focuses on giving you a quick overview of the subject by indicating the ideas and sub-ideas. The ideas are presented in a hierarchical way. But in this article, we will be discussing making a good sentence outline.

Here’s an example from St. Louis Community College:

Swimming is an excellent sport for senior citizens. (thesis)

I. It provides pleasure.
A. It is an enjoyable way to relax.
B. To compete with each other is exciting.
1. Seniors can participate in Senior Olympics.
2. They can compete in water aerobic classes.

II. Swimming is a healthy exercise.
A. It helps keep the elderly physically fit.
1. It strengthens muscles.
2. It tones the body.
3. It builds endurance.
4. It strengthens the heart.
B. It increases mental alertness.
1. The physical exertion helps relieve stress.
2. Being more alert keeps the elderly younger longer.

III. Meeting regularly provides seniors with companionship.
A. It is an organized activity with their peers.
B. It is a wonderful way to make new friends.

Here are some tips:

  • All the headings and sub-headings must be in sentence form.
  • The formatting should follow this sequence of characters: Roman Numerals to Capitalized Letters to Arabic Numerals to Lowercase Letters.
  • It must precisely show the ideas and their relationships with each sentence presenting a single idea.
  • The sentences should never be in a question form.
