DECLARATIVE SENTENCE – A sentence is determined according to its purpose and here are some things to know about declarative sentences.

There are four types of sentences and they categorized according to their purpose. They are the following below:

  • declarative sentence (statement)
  • interrogative sentence (question)
  • imperative sentence (command)
  • exclamative sentence (exclamation)

And in this article, we will take further into understanding what a declarative sentence is. A sentence is declarative when it make a statement – may it be about a major or minor detail. This is the most common type of sentence that is often used in having conversations.

It’s main function is to communicate information directly like stating facts, opinions, observations, or explanations. Unlike imperative sentences which are understood to have “you” as the subject, a declarative sentence must have a subject (the noun that performs the action) and a predicate (the verb or action in the sentence). This type of sentence always ends in a period.

Under declarative sentences, there are four types.

Here are the types and an example of each:

  • Simple sentence (one independent clause)

Example:

  1. The motorcycle is blue.
  • Compound sentence (two or more independent clauses connected by coordinating conjunctions)

Example:

  1. The motorcycle is blue but I like green more.
  • Complex sentence (one independent clause and subordinate clauses)

Example:

  1. If I’ll have my own bike, I want it to be color green.
  • Compound-complex sentence (two or more independent clauses and one or more subordinate clauses)

Example:

  1. Though I prefer driving cars, I bought a motorcycle, and I enjoyed it very much.
