Jerwin Ancajas Knocked Down Sparring Partner, Irate Coach Throws Bottle

Filipino boxer Jerwin Ancajas was thrown with water bottle by a coach after he knocked down his sparring partner.

The sparring session between Filipino champion Jerwin Ancajas and his sparring partner’s camp in Las Vegas was dominated by temperament. When Ancajas knocked out his sparring partner, the opposition trainer threw a mineral water bottle at the former IBF super flyweight champion.

Eumir Marcial, the IBF world super flyweight champion, can be seen cornering his sparring partner in a YouTube video. Ancajas stepped back to reclaim his sparring partner, but he unleashed a left hook that sent his opponent into the corner.

He got struck with the sparring trainer’s bottle at this point. Tempers rose, but the event did not spiral out of control when Capetillo and TM Boxing Gym owner Jorge Capetillo, who is connected to Filipino fighters, intervened and reconciled the two camps.

Ancajas later took to the Joven Sports vlog of his coach, Joven Jimenez, to clarify what truly happened, so as not to complicate the matter as posts of the sparring session went viral. Ancajas claims that he knew his sparring partner would guard the body, so he threw a left hook upward instead.

It hit on his sparring partner’s jaw, causing him to fall back but being restrained by the ropes. His sparring partners and people in his corner, he claimed, boast about him. He said that the shell he was launching was only weak and that he did not mean to hit the blow.

Ancajas was having trouble connecting on his taller and longer sparring partner during the opening round of his first sparring session in Las Vegas. So in the second round, Ancajas dug in and concentrated his blows on the body.

Ancajas grabbed control and cornered his sparring partner, and the ruse succeeded. Ancajas softened up and took a step away, sensing that his sparring partner was in pain. When Ancajas heard the command “go” from World Boxing Organization intercontinental bantamweight champion Jonas Sultan, he agreed and landed the session-ending blow.

Ancajas apologized to his sparring partner, the trainer, and his sparring partner’s mother, who was filming their sparring. The mother was even more accommodating, telling Ancajas that what had happened was just part of the sport and that she would give her son a lesson.
