Speculation surfaced that MMFF 2021 did not do well
MMFF2021 – Is it true that the Metro Manila Film Festival this year is a failure? Here is the reaction of the film fest’s spokesperson to this.
It has been a tradition of the movie industry in the Philippines to showcase different genres of films every December 25, the start of the showing of movie entries in cinemas worldwide.
For the past years, moviegoers have been anticipating this time of the year and it has been recorded in the past that cinemas are jam-packed. However, since people are still worrying the pandemic, it is inevitable that the viewing habits of many people also changed.
In a report by ABS-CBN’s showbiz reporter MJ Felipe, it can be seen that there were no long queues in cinemas anymore, unlike in the past years. It was also rumored that the movie of sisters Alex and Toni Gonzaga ‘ExorSis‘ only earned P7,500 on its first day.
Based on the article in Manila Bulletin, MMFF Spokesperson Noel Ferrer refuted the speculation that this year’s film festival is a failure. He said that the earnings on December 25 has been the highest grossing day yet of the festival. “Not even the big Hollywood films (like ‘Eternals’) are able to approximate the gross that MMFF 2021 has generated,” he added.
Ferrer also stressed that the MMFF 2021 first day earning already covered 1/3 of the film festival online earning last year. “Sa first 3-4 days pa lang, puwede nang malampasan ang total gross last year,” the film fest’s spokesperson said.
Ferrer also said that just like in Hollywood, the Philippine movie industry should also take the leap of faith. He said that it is a known fact that there are still a lot of people who worry about the pandemic but a single step should be taken. “We really had to take that painful first step — because we really have to start somewhere,” he stressed.
