Overpriced Water in Cebu After Typhoon Odette Onslaught Criticized

Inconsiderate Seller Criticized Online for Selling Overpriced Water in Cebu

The online community air dismay at an inconsiderate seller due to overpriced water per gallon after the onslaught of Typhoon Odette in Cebu.

Due to the stunning price it purportedly gave for mineral water, a chat between a netizen and a businessman in Cebu has gone viral on social media. Mira Ygot shared a merchant on Facebook who told her that they offer mineral water for 2090 pesos for five liters.

Aside from that, the merchant informed her that she qualifies for a discount because the contents of the container they offer are 19 liters. Ygot was not persuaded by the seller’s explanation and stated that the water they were selling was extremely pricey.

The merchant, on the other hand, chastised her for refusing to take the deal for her water price. The buyer appeared to be dissatisfied at this point, reminding the trader should not overprice what she was selling simply because a calamity had occurred in their neighborhood.

The merchant explained that there had been a misunderstanding between them and Ygot, claiming that they sell gasoline rather than water. However, other internet users believe it is still ‘overpriced’ if the merchant is selling gasoline because current sales are only 50-60 pesos.

Meanwhile, a concerned netizen noted that some vendors are selling overpriced water in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, where Typhoon Odette also had a big impact. The seller is upset since the regular P15 per gallon water is now being offered for P200, according to the netizen.

  1. That is the Law of Supply and Demand. At those high prices, more sellers will take the risk to deliver goods that are greatly needed. If the government limits prices, why should sell there when the product is easier to market in other areas.

This person was greatly affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. So, I have experienced what those greatly affected by Typhoon Odette (Rai) and our church is one of many sending relief. In Iloilo we are not as affected, but will not forget those who were greatly affected.
