Comelec To Finalize Cases Vs Presidential Candidates On Dec 15

COMELEC To Finalize Cases Against Presidential Bets “Hopefully On 15th”

COMELEC TO FINALIZE CASES – According to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), they are “pretty confident” that they could resolve cases versus presidential candidates by December 15.

Furthermore, it also said that it can release the final list of presidential candidates for the 2022 elections within the week. However, the COMELEC said that December 15 wouldn’t be a “hard deadline”.

Instead, COMELEC director James Jimenez said that it could take a few days. But, he noted that they are “expeditiously” working on resolving the cases.

Previously, several cases were filed against presidential aspirant, Bongbong Marcos. As a response to this, Marcos’ camp said that those who filed the cases are within their rights to do so. But, they emphasized that these were merely “nuisance cases“.

Meanwhile, Jimenez said that they are aware of the repercussions of delaying the results of the cases. “The Comelec is working on these petitions, the Comelec will make a ruling in the proper time“, he added.

Currently, there are nine petitions filed against Marcos. Moreover, separate petitions were filed for the cancelation of his certificate of candidacy. If this pulls through, Marcos would be disqualified in the 2022 national elections.

Among the most known of the cases is Marcos’ tax evasion conviction in 1995. Based on an article from ABS-CBN, the petitioners stated:

The heirs of the late corrupt dictator, President Marcos, Sr., particularly his son, respondent Marcos Jr.’s continuous and unjustified refusal to pay the massive estate taxes due on the estate of the late corrupt dictator, coupled with his previous convictions for similarly violating the 1977 NIRC, as ruled in CA-G.R. CR No. 18569, betrays his willful evasion of his duty to the society to file his tax returns, and more importantly, to pay his taxes. Clearly this repeated evasion of his positive duty to the society equates to moral turpitude
