DOH Mulls Possibility Of Mandatory Vaccination In Philippines

MANDATORY VACCINATION – The Department of Health said it was eyeing the possibility of mandatory vaccination in the Philippines.

Currently, there is no law or protocol requiring citizens to get vaccinated. However, some establishments have put up their own vaccine protocols such as only allowing vaccinated customers to their business. Meanwhile, some employers would only hire vaccinated individuals.

Obviously, these mandates caused a stir, and people who chose not to be vaccinated amid a pandemic called these establishments out for discrimination.

But, according to Labor Secretary Eduardo Bello III, employers have a right to only hire those vaccinated. He compared it to an employer wanting to hire someone with a pleasing personality. Belo explained that if an employer has a right to deny an applicant because he doesn’t have a pleasing personality, he has a right to deny one that wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19.

Now, mandatory vaccination for all residents may become a possibility. Based on an article from Inquirer, the Interagency Task Force (IATF) on COVID-19 may push for a protocol to make vaccinations mandatory.

As per the article, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said:

Now [this is] one of the things we are looking at because we will never achieve the immunity needed by our population if there are still sectors of society that remain unvaccinated…

One of the ways we can do this is to make it mandatory

Previously, the DOH itself announced that individuals are free to choose whether or not they want to get vaccinated. Meanwhile, the government still aims to achieve herd immunity by inoculating at least 70% of the population.
