Man in Butuan City Dies of Coconuts Falling to His Head During Earthquake
BUTUAN CITY – Man dies from falling coconuts after they directly hit his head during the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Mindanao.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 jolted certain parts of Mindanao early Thursday, according to the Manila Bulletin. The quake struck at a depth of 65.6 kilometers (40.76 miles), with its epicenter in the Philippine Sea southeast of Davao City, according to the USGS.
A 20-year-old male from Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, died after being hit in the head by falling coconuts during the earthquake. The Tandag City Police Station (TCPS) got a call from a concerned citizen concerning the finding of a body in a Lechon house in Purok Sunnys Farm in Barangay Mabua, according to the TCPS.
Reniel John Salve Mindajao, a local citizen, was identified as the victim following an investigation at the scene. During the big earthquake on Thursday at about 1 a.m., some occupants heard heavy banging from the top of the Lechon house, according to the inquiry.
On the same day, around 9:30 a.m., the proprietor of the Lechon home discovered Mindajao’s carcass. Upon further investigation in the area, the TCPS discovered four immature coconuts spread about the victim’s remains.
During the investigation, a big hole on the roof of the Lechon house created by fallen coconuts was also uncovered. The fell coconut fruits enter through the shattered galvanized roof, landing directly on the victim’s head.
The victim was discovered without any wounds or signs of foul play, according to the TCPS report. Meanwhile, a rarely-used airport in Davao Oriental province’s southern part saw minor runway fractures but no damage to the passenger terminal building.
Initial warnings from the Philippines’ seismology agency included the possibility of damage, aftershocks, and a tsunami. Data eventually revealed that there was no threat of a devastating tsunami, according to the report.
