DOJ Warns Fake Email Address of Justice Chief Used for Solicitation

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has warned the public against the fake email address using the name of a justice chief to solicit money.

The bogus email address, according to the department, claimed to belong to Sec. Guevarra, Menardo. According to the investigation, the suspect used the email address to request assistance in obtaining iTunes gift cards as a donation to hospice patients.

“It has come to the attention of the Department of Justice (DOJ) – Office of Cybercrime (OOC) that a certain email address namely, [email protected], is being utilized by an unknown subject representing himself as Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra,” the DOJ Office of Cybercrime said in a public advisory.

“The said email address was used to send messages to a number of recipients requesting assistance in the alleged procurement of iTunes gift cards as donations to patients and hospice care units across the Philippines, subject to reimbursement,” the advisory added.

Guevarra’s email address, [email protected], is the only one listed by the DOJ. When the aforementioned email is received, the public should search for a warning message from the email provider.

The agency also urged the public to report the message as phishing, block the sender, report the message as spam, and report the incident to the email provider, according to the agency. The perpetrator is culpable under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, which carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison or a fine of at least P200,000, according to the Department of Justice.

Meanwhile, some government bodies have previously issued warnings to the public about scammers and hackers using their names to defraud innocent people online. The offenders will utilize the names of the agencies to make their scamming appear legitimate, and their victims will soon believe it.
