QC Demolishes Village Guard House Collecting “Toll” Fees to Motorists

QC Government Demolishes Village Guard House for Obstruction, Illegal Fees

The local government of Quezon City (QC) demolishes a guard house from a private village for obstruction and allegedly collecting fees from motorists.

Previously, multiple viral videos were shared that showed certain private village guard houses having problems with motorists, particularly delivery riders. Other guard houses are requesting a driver’s license at a private subdivision’s gate, which has become a contentious topic.

Aside from that, it appears that certain private subdivisions are charging drivers a ‘toll’ to travel through them. One of these is a guard house held by California Village on Katipunan Avenue, also known as Mabuhay Lane.

Motorists were reportedly charged to pass through the guardhouse. As a result, the local government of Quezon City recently announced that the guard house had been dismantled for impeding the road and illegal collection.

The QC government stated in its declaration that the village guard house was collecting between P50 and P200 per day from motorists, particularly delivery trucks. Elmo San Diego, the director of the Department of Public Order and Safety, has made it clear that the city will not tolerate this.

“Tuloy-tuloy ang operation natin sa mga illegal na guard house kahit pa sa private subdivisions. Makikita naman na obstruction ang mga ito at hindi dapat pinagbabayad ang mga motorista para lang makadaan sa mga pampublikong kalsada,” San Diego said.

The mayor of Quezon City, Joy Belmonte, agreed, adding that private subdivisions that collect fees at their guard houses are exploiting motorists. The Mabuhay lanes, according to Mayor Belmonte, are public roadways, and “no one should pay any price to access these roads.”

“We do not tolerate private subdivisions that take advantage of our motorists just because they have to pass their gates,” Belmonte added.
