Fans Barred From Spectating Olympics In Person Due To Rise Of Delta Variant Cases
FANS BARRED FROM OLYMPICS – New coronavirus strains such as the Delta variant caused officials to ban spectators from the Olympics.
Currently, the new Delta Variant has caused new COVID-19 waves in parts of the Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe and in the United States. As of now, the Delta variants is considered as the most infectious strain since the beginning of the pandemic.
It was first discovered months ago in India, but it quickly spread and is now driving epidemics even in nations with strong vaccination campaigns. As the official worldwide death toll crossed four million, the World Health Organization warned that the world had reached a critical juncture.
Japan, where the strain is responsible for about 30% of infection, banned spectators from Olympic venues in Tokyo, where the majority of the competitions will take place.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga had previously announced that the capital will be placed under a state of emergency for the duration of the Games, which will last through August 22, though the restrictions will be far less severe than those imposed in other regions of the world, such as Australia.
