Manila Hospitals In “Safe Zone” Following Downtrend In COVID Cases

MANILA HOSPITALS – Metro Manila has seen a decline in daily COVID-19 infections leading to hospitals being back in the “safe zone”.

However, the Department of Health cautioned against complacency in health protocols. Furthermore, occupancy in several cities and towns within the NCR Plus remained high.

During the DOH’s briefing on Monday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said:

Our health-care utilization rate and ICU (intensive care unit) utilization rate in the NCR is now in the safe zone but still at high risk in some NCR Plus areas…

We should not be complacent. We should be more strict in complying with health standards

During the COVID-19 surge in Metro Manila, isolation wards for COVID-19 were at 48 percent. Meanwhile, ICU bed occupancy dropped down to 61 percent from 88 percent last March.

Moreover, daily cases detected in the Metro no average at around 1,700 to 1,800 cases compared to the 4,000 – 5,000 cases during the surge. Additionally, the nationwide weekly moving daily average went to 5,886 from a peak of 10,000 cases.

Still, with the Indian Variant confirmed in the Philippines, health authorities cautioned. According to an article from Inquirer, an infectious disease expert believed that it would be hard to say if the virus has had community transmissions.

As such, Dr. Rontgene called for heightened contact tracing, testing, and border control initiatives. Along with this, he suggested using the “Severity Index” as a criteria for selecting patient samples for genome sequencing.
