PHIVOLCS RECORDS 254 VOLCANIC QUAKES – Coming into April, Taal Volcano continues its unrest with consistent volcanic activity.

On Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 254 tremors with 220 lasting for a minute to 27 minutes. Furthermore, activity on the main crater produced weak emissions of steam-laden plumes reaching 5 meters in height.

Because of this, Phivolcs retains Alert Level 2 for Taal Volcano. Under this, Phivolcs warns that sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic tremors, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas may occur within nearby areas.

Moreover, the public was reminded that entry into Taal Volcano island’s permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited. In a statement, Phivolcs said:

Local government units are advised to continuously assess and strengthen the preparedness of previously evacuated barangays around Taal Lake in case of renewed unrest

Since the beginning of the year, Taal has shown similar levels of unrest compared to last year’s eruption. As such, local governments and other concerned groups are tightly monitoring the situation and providing relief to those affected.
