The novel is one of the connected novels that were written by the Philippine national hero Jose Rizal (full name Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal y Alonzo Realonda).

He wrote the novel to make Filipinos see the abuse of power the priests show during the Spanish Colonization period.

The novel has 64 chapters. We are going to read the ninteenth chapter.

Chapter 19 is entitled “A Schoolmaster’s Difficulties”. Here is the summary of the Chapter:

Two men dressed in funeral clothes are meditating on a lake in silence. The two are Ibarra and a schoolmaster, The schoolmaster confessed that he was with Tenyente Guevarra in throwing the corpse of Don Rafael.

Ibarra was not angry at the schoolmaster but was rather interested in the schoolmaster. The latter said that he want to change the system of the school but failed.

As time passes by, few children have been going to school. The classroom that they are currently using is a stable. The children were taught to speak prayers in Spanish. The schoolmaster also showed the harsh punishment the children face every time they made a mistake.

He doesn’t want this way of teaching and tried to change it but he was lambasted by Friar Damaso in front of his students. Ibarra lamented over the schoolmaster’s difficulties but gave him hope that this will change one day.
