Chapter 14 Noli Me Tangere

The novel is one of the connected novels that were written by the Philippine national hero Jose Rizal (full name Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal y Alonzo Realonda).

He wrote the novel to make Filipinos see the abuse of power the priests show during the Spanish Colonization period.

The novel has 64 chapters. We are going to read the fourteenth chapter.

Chapter 14 is entitled “Tasio: Lunatic or Sage”. Here is the summary of the Chapter:

Ibarra is with the philosopher named Tasio as they head to visit the latter’s late wife.

Tasio, who is actually Don Anastacio is a stray elder, albeit rich. Tasio is known to be smart and a spontaneous speaker. His mother prevented him from finishing school as she feared that his high intelligence will ake him forget God. His mother wanted him to be a friar.

However, Tasio rejected it and married someone. His wife died a yeear after their marriage. He spent most of his life reading, abandoning his inheritance.

Tasio was joyed at the sight of dark skies and thunderous weather. He wished for humanity to be cleansed through flooding

He head to the church and saw two siblings. He advised the two to head home as their mother have a special dinner. The siblings were happy but decided to remain in the church,

Tacio left the church and head to the residence of Don Phillip and Doray. They talked about Ibarra and how he felt about what happened to his father.

Like before, he said his goodbye and walked amid the dark sky and thunder.

    That was only a part or fraction of the discussion. The BULK of the discussion & message of chapter 14 centers on the doctrine of purgatory. Tacio gave Don Filipo & Dona Doray a strong dose of history & Biblical explication of why he debunks it!
