SPANISH SHIP ELCANO – The Philippine Coast Guard ship BRP Suluan recently meet the Spanish Ship Elcano at the waters of Sulu.

The photo from the National Quincentennial Committee of the said meeting of the two ships was posted by ABS-CBN News’ Willard Cheng.

Elcano, named after Juan Sebastian Elcano, who completed the first circumnavigation, is reenacting the said historical event, which occured half a millenium ago.

The photo was taken from someone aboard BRP Suluan along with the Spanish Ship.

The meeting is part of the commemoration of the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world on March 16, 1521, based on the tweet,

The Spanish embassy said that Elcano will arrive on this day in Guiuan, Eastern Samar and will head to Suluan and Homonhon Islands until March 18. It will then head to Cebu on March 20 to 22.

Navigation through the Philippines is a key part of the tour Elcano is taking, the embassy added.
