It is a constellation that lies in the southern sky Its name means “the southern triangle” in Latin. The three brightest stars in the constellation form an equilateral triangle.

Nicolas Louis de Lacaille called the constellation “le Triangle Austral ou le Niveau” and described it as “niveau” or the surveyor’s level

The constellation was created by the Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius. It is located too far south to be visible from Europe and most of the northern hemisphere but never sets below the horizon south of the equator.

It houses the pair of galaxies ESO 69-6, the open cluster NGC 6025, the spiral galaxy NGC 5938, the barred spiral galaxy ESO 137-001, the planetary nebulas NGC 5979 and Henize 2-138.

It is the 83rd largest constellation and occupies an area of about 110 square degrees. It lies in SQ3, the third quadrant of the southern hemisphere.

Triangulum Australe belongs to the Hercules family of constellations, along with Aquila, Ara, Centaurus, Corona Australis, Corvus, Crater, Crux, Cygnus, Hercules, Hydra, Lupus, Lyra, Ophiuchus, Sagitta, Scutum, Sextans, Serpens and Vulpecula.
