BFAR: Red Tide Advisory In 12 Areas In Eastern Visayas

BFAR – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has recently issued a red tide advisory in 12 areas in Eastern Visayas (Region VIII).

The fisheries bureau has reported the existence of red tide toxin in the said areas which poses a threat to shellfish harvesting and trading in the region, according to a report from Inquirer.

The bureau’s Assistant Director for Operations Juan Albaladejo said that the red tide started in the third quarter of 2020. That period of time, a mild El Niño caused a long dry season.

Albaladejo urged the public to refrain from gathering, selling, and consuming all-types of shellfish.

The bureau added that shellfish harvesting, marketing, and transportation from the affected areas should be controlled and regulated by local governments.

Red tide pollutants have been impacting coastal areas and certain bays in the region, according to their advisory

Affected areas include the following:

  • Calubian in Leyte province
  • Guiuan, Eastern Samar
  • Cambatutay Bay in Tarangnan, Samar
  • Zumarraga, Samar
  • Daram, Samar
  • Leyte coastal areas, Leyte
  • Cancabato Bay in Tacloban City
  • Matarinao Bay stretching across the towns of:
    • General MacArthur, Eastern Samar
    • Hernani, Eastern Samar
    • Quinapondan, Eastern Samar
    • Salcedo, Eastern Samar
  • Biliran in Biliran province
  • Carigara Bay, Leyte
  • San Pedro Bay in Basey, Samar
  • Ormoc Bay in the towns of:
    • Ormoc
    • Merida
    • Albuera in Leyte
