According to LiveScience, it is a system composed of a complex collection of nerves and specialized cells known as neurons, which transmit signals between different parts of the body. The system is essentially the body’s electrical wiring.

Parts and Function

Here are the following parts:

  • Central Nervous System (CNS)
    • One of the two main parts of the system, consists of the following:
      • Brain
        • one of the largest and most complex organs in the human body. It is composed of more than 100 billion nerves.
      • Spinal Cord
        • a long, thin, and tubular structure made up of nervous tissue, which extends from the medulla oblongata in the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column.
  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
    • The other main part of the system which connects the CNS to the rest of the body. It is made up of the nerves, or thick bundles of axons carrying messages back and forth between the CNS and the body. It has two major subdivisions:
      • Somatic
        • it is associated with activities traditionally thought of as conscious or voluntary. It is involved in the relay of sensory and motor information to and from the CNS
      • Autonomic
        • this part controls our internal organs and glands and is considered to be outside the realm of voluntary control. Which can be further subdivided into the following:
          • Sympathetic
            • Involved in preparing the body for stress-related activities
          • Parasympathetic
            • Associated with returning the body to routine, day-to-day operations
