It is a grasshopper species under the pygmy grasshoppers family Tetrigidae. The Tetrigidae is a family of groundhoppers, pygmy grasshoppers, pygmy devils or grouse locusts.

This species of pygmy grasshopper is a new peculiar, spiky, and yellowish species of the genus Tegotettix Hancock, and is described from the Davao region of the island of Mindanao

The species is visually similar to T. cristiferus from Borneo and T. armatus Hancock.

It is, by far the third known species in the Philippines under the said genus.

The pygmy devil is 16.02 millimeters long from the tip of the vertex to the tip of the pronotum and has a greenish-yellowish-white body with dark markings on certain parts of the body

It also has chitinous surfaces that are smooth and shiny and not armed like other species of Tegotettix Hancock.

It is also one of the pygmy devil species with the highest number of pronotal projections found at the median carina, at about 11 of them.

The scientific name of Mindanao Horned Pygmy Devil is Tegotettix derijei

Tegotettix or Tegotettix Hancock is a genus of pygmy devils under the pygmy grasshoppers family Tetrigidae.

The specific epithet derijei, on the other hand, is in honor of CMU President Jesus Antonio G. Derije, who was known for his valuable contribution and support to the implementation of biodiversity and conservation research projects of the Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao.
