Russia Detected The First Case Of Avian Flu In Humans

AVIAN FLU DETECTED IN HUMANS – Amid the coronavirus pandemic, health authorities in Russia reported the detection of influenza H5N8 in humans.

As such, they reported to the World Health Organization what they believed was the first case of influenza or bird flu if confirmed. According to reports, the infected humans were workers exposed to bird flocks.

Currently, the workers were found to be asymptomatic with no human to human transmission of the virus. Meanwhile, Anna Popova, Russia’s Head of Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing, reported that seven poultry farm workers were infected.

However, the cases were yet to be confirmed by WHO. Still, Russian health authorities said they were discussing the matter with national authorities to give provide more information and “assess the public health impact”.

Previously, the avian flu only affects birds. Furthermore, there have been several variants of the flu detected. Most cases of human infection to the virus are due to contact with infected birds or surfaces with the presence of bird excursions and other bodily fluids.

The last time the H5N8 avian flu had an outbreak was in 2014. It infected poultry farms across Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
