The dwarf planet was discovered by American astronomer Clyde William Tombaugh, according to a report from Manila Bulletin.

Pluto was formerly among the nine planets of the solar system until in 2006, it was reclassified into a dwarf planet

Based on the report, Tombaugh found the said astronomical object in the year 1930.

Now what exactly is the former ninth planet?

About Pluto

Known formerly as the most distant planet in the Solar System, Pluto is also one of the largest known members of a shadowy zone called the Kuiper Belt which is located beyond Neptune.

The name was suggested by Venetia Burney, who decided to name the planet after the Roman counterpart of Hades, the Greek god of the underworld.

The name also pays homage to American astronomer named Percival Lowell, who hinted its existence in 1905. The first two letters are the astronomer’s initials.

Pluto is covered in methane ice. It also has an ice ridge terrain that looks like a snake skin.

Pluto’s features include the huge heart-shaped region known unofficially as Tombaugh Regio, named after Tombaugh and the Latin word for region. Tombaugh Regio is made of carbon monoxide ice.
