Cracks Seen on Walls of Mall in Davao del Sur Following Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake

EARTHQUAKE – Cracks can be seen on the walls of a mall in Davao del Sur following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake.

On Sunday, February 7, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake was recorded in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. The agency said it was the second earthquake to have has hit almost the same area on the same day. Their initial measurement was magnitude 6.3.

The second quake happened at 12:22 pm., 6km southeast of Magsaysay. The first tremor that has a magnitude of 4.8 struck 9 km west of the same town at 7:28 am.

Intensity V were felt in the following areas:

  • Kidapawan City, Arakan, Carmen, Kabacan, Makilala and M’Lang, North Cotabato
  • City of Koronadal and Banga, South Cotabato
  • Matalam, Cotabato
  • Bansalan, Hagonoy, Magsaysay and Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur

Intensity IV:

  • Davao City
  • Banisilan and Midsayap, North Cotabato
  • Don Carlos, Bukidnon
  • Polomok, Sto. Nino and Norala, South Cotabato South Cotabato
  • Alabel, Kiamba and Malapatan, Saranggani
  • Palimbang and Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat

Intensity III

  • Cotabato City
  • Cagayan De Oro City
  • Kadingilan and Kitaotao, Bukidnon
  • Tagum City, Davao del Norte
  • Maco and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro

Intensity II  

  • Cagayan de Oro City
  •  Kalilangan, Bukidnon

Intensity I

  • Bislig City, Surigao Del Sur

Phivolcs said both quakes were tectonic in origin and had a depth of 15km. The Philippine Red Cross recently shared some photos of a mall in Davao del Sur that acquired visible cracks.  

In the caption of the post, it wrote, “Cracks can be seen on the walls of a mall in Davao del Sur following the 6.3 magnitude earthquake which caused moderate to strong shaking in Kidapawan City, Tacurong City, General Santos, Iligan and Davao del Sur.”

Fortunately, the mall did not collapse and no casualties were recorded so far. Red Cross said their volunteers were already mobilized to assess and monitor the situation.
