Surgeon Viral After Admitting To Carving Initials Into Organs During Surgery

SUREGEON VIRAL – A surgeon from the U.K. went viral after he admitted to carving his initials into the organ’s of two of his patients.

Once the news went viral, people definitely had mixed reactions to this. For some, this was a gross example of malpractice. Meanwhile, others view this as a sort of “signature” of the person who saved a life, comparing the surgery to “artwork”.

According to an article from IFLS, the surgeon was identified as Simon Bramhall. Furthermore, he said that he worked at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham and specialized in liver, spleen, and the pancreas.

Bramhall had over a decade worth of experience with performing transplants and surgeries. Moreover, Bramhall was known to be a respected doctor who gained media attention after he operated on a transplant using a liver of a dying patient of a plane crash.

But, after another surgeon performed a follow-up surgery on one of Bramhall’s patients, he noticed marks that definitely shouldn’t be there. After opening up the patient to expose the organs, the new surgeon saw the markings “SB” etched onto her liver.

According to Bramhall, he used an argon beam, which is an instrument used to stop bleeding during surgery to carve his initials. A few months later, another patient was found with the same markings carved using the same method.

As per the article, Bramhall was suspended and he eventually resigned. However, he now faced criminal charges. The 53-year-old doctor appeared on court and pleaded guilty to “assault by beating”. However, he pleaded “not guilty” for charges of “bodily harm”.

The marks left by the argon beams usually disappears after a while, however, patient Tracey Scriven, a previous patient of Bramhall said she doesn’t mind what her doctor did.

“Even if he did put his initials on a transplanted liver, is it really that bad?…
I wouldn’t have cared if he did it to me. The man saved my life”

Meanwhile, the courts said that the case was very unusual and had a lack of “legal precedent in criminal law”. After the doctor’s suspension, UK group Patient Concern stated: “This is a patient we are talking about, not an autograph book”.

As a response, Bramhall said that carving his initials to the organs was a “mistake”.
