DepEd Denies Massive Dropouts Due To Distancing Woes

DEPED DENIES MASSIVE DROPOUTS – The Department of Education refuted claims that a significant number of students have dropped out due to issue with distance learning platforms.

Previously, distance learning and modular learning had become a hot-topic issue as many wanted to have an academic freeze instead. Primarily, the reason for this was due to problems with the platform’s implementation.

For starters, not everybody had internet connection to do online classes. Then, distance learning with modules doesn’t provide much learning as students would be left to learn themselves without the guidance of teachers.

However, when it comes to issues with dropouts, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said they haven’t heard or recorded anything to conclude claims of “massive dropouts”.

Furthermore, Briones emphasized that through DepEd’s “Academic Ease” policy, stress of both students and teachers may be alleviated through distance learning. The policy covers how schools can “reconsider” the time required for students to finish their activities.

Moreover, other activities may also be considered as “optional”. Still, several teachers group have raised concerns that significantly less students are attending distance learning classes.

Meanwhile, according to an article from ABS-CBN, around 25 million students were registered in basic education this year. But, merely 2 million from the total number of enrollees continued on says data from DepEd.
