Roque Wants To Help UP Set Up Meeting With DND

Roque Wants To Help UP With DND-UP Accord Abrogation

ROQUE WANTS TO HELP UP – Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said he’s willing to help the University of the Philippines have a discussion with the Department of National Defense.

Recently, the DND severed a decade-long accord with the University of the Philippines that disallows military and police presence on its campuses. According to an interview with CNN, Roque said: “I’m opening my good office for them to have this discussion“.

Roque was a former faculty member and alumnus of the University. Furthermore, he said he supported UP President Danilo Concepcion’s plan to have a conversation with Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana regarding the severed accord.

Additionally, Roque emphasized that the accord worked for UP for the past 30 years. As such, he wanted to talk about why the accord shouldn’t continue for the next 30 years.

Lorenzana previously stated that the accord had become obsolete. He explained that UP’s campuses have become a “safe haven” for enemies of the state. Meanwhile, UP student councils across the Philippines denounced the DND’s decision and claimed it was an attack on academic freedom and freedom of speech.

However, Roque noted that students of the University of the Philippines won’t be “cowed” due to the accord’s termination.
