SAGITTA CONSTELLATION – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about the northern constellation Sagitta , the Arrow.
It is one of the northern constellations in the sky. It means “the arrow” in Latin. It was formerly known as Oistos by the Greeks.
In Greek mythology, it is arrow that Heracles used to kill the eagle that Zeus sent to gnaw Prometheus’ liver. Prometheus is the titan responsible for molding men and women out of clay in gods’ likeness, and gave them fire that he had stolen from the gods. The latter made Zeus punish the titan and chained him to Mount Caucasus, where the eagle gnaw his liver, which would always grow again at night.
The constellation is the third smallest in the sky. It houses the globular cluster Messier 71 (NGC 6838) and the Necklace Nebula.
It is the 86th largest constellation in the night sky and occupies an area of about 80 square degrees. It lies in NQ4, the fourth quadrant of the northern hemisphere.
Sagitta belongs to the Hercules family, along with Aquila, Ara, Centaurus, Corona Australis, Corvus, Crater, Crux, Cygnus, Hercules, Hydra, Lupus, Lyra, Ophiuchus, Scutum, Sextans, Serpens, Triangulum Australe and Vulpecula.
